La Paloma Theater and The Big Lebowski

This is both a theater review and a (short) movie review.

La Paloma was hands down the best theater experience I have ever had. The tickets are cheap, the interior is unique, the seats are comfortable (although they don’t recline but who cares), and everyone's so excited to just watch a movie. The owner got on stage and thanked everyone for coming and had his dog jump through a hoop on stage, I mean you really can’t beat that. He even played a cartoon and trailer before the film – both on 35mm – just because he thought it was cool and it reminded him of the theater experience he had growing up. I could not recommend this theater enough, and I would watch pretty much anything it shows.

Anyway onto the movie

The Big Lebowski, 1998

Dr. by The Coen Brothers

I don’t think there is much I could say about this movie that hasn’t already been said, so I will keep it short.

Just two years after creating an exceptionally unique and engaging film in Fargo, the Coen brothers created a comedic masterpiece, demonstrating their excellence across genres, which they have only further established as their careers have progressed.

Completely self-contained (or almost completely – Nixon bowling is on The Dude’s wall), the jokes only rely on the movies’ characters, making it near impossible for a joke to fall flat.

Each actor’s performance is commendable, fitting completely with the character who was written. I couldn’t imagine a different actor/actress for any major role in the film.

I don’t think that any more of my analysis can do this justice – it always makes the joke worse when you explain it – my best praise of this movie is to say go watch it if you haven’t already. This and Clerks (1994) are in a world of their own when it comes to comedies.
